hello all my brothers and sisters , big head and i left for sante fe on tuesday mornibg around 11:30 am. we had an uneventful trip, except when big heads bike broke a tie down and was leaning over the side of the trailer going 60 mph, to meet up with cool breeze, chicagowolf, scooter trash, sober joe and paca. we arrived in st louis around 4:00 am wed morning, not too long after the north-central crew arrived. of course they waited for us at a local gas station to greet us and lead us back to cool breezes home. which i might add, he opened up to all of us like we were blood relatives. what a guy! sj and paca were already there, in their 4 wheeled electra-glide, but asleep. sj and paca left in the early am. we followed near 10:00. we got to catchers parking lot about 11:00 pm to meet wild monkey, the s. carolina crew(pockets, slider and simple man), mouse was to arrive on friday, and pockets was crashed. by the way wild monkey rode 1000 miles within 24 hrs!!!! sj reminded us that it was only wed night, and asked if we had reservations for thurs at the campgrounds. oops! thurs morning, we left with the sc boys and headed west. when we crossed the new mex border, the sceanary was breath taking. mesa's, high plateu's (pardon my spelling) and desert are new to me. as we drove the last 100 or so miles we climbed and climbed. and of course the views anly got better. i cannot put it into words. when we got to the camp there was room for us one day early. friday we picked mouse up from the airport. the security was not excited to see eight motorcycles sitting around and asked us to ride around the loop until mouse got in. did i mention the sceanary to alburque was great too?? meals and a meeting where we took almost all the seats. rides and meeting one member who signed up on the spot and a potential new member. sunday was time for the big ride. i didn't go so someone else will have to fill in on that trip. wild monkey and i went to los alomos, birth place of the atomic bomb. again beautiful views, no awsome views. sunday night tom, our new mex state rep, and his wife( whos road name i'll leave for someone else to anounce ) were hosts to a cook out that was fantastic. tom's mom was great too! monday morning we were looking to an 8am start. right! we left near 11:00 with the sc crew. we drove non-stop, and took rt 40 back. old rt66, it was a new route for us not pockets and company. tues morning heading east near the ark/tenn border, we got to see a clear and very red sunrise. since we were so close to graceland we had to stop. well the memphis city workers forgot to put the south bound signs back up pointing the way and we missed it. having breakfast a few miles down the road, a pair of truckers talked us into going back. it was worth it. pictures to follow. as soon as mouse gets them developed. we parted from mouse, pockets, slider and simple man when rt 81 north parted from rt 40. we were doing fine until a tractor trailer overturned a few miles north of us near harrisonburg, va, put us in a two and a half hour detour. anyway we got to my house by 6:00 am today and unloaded. big head went home and i had to do some house work. i'll get to sleep later today and back to work tomorrow. i want to thank cool breeze for his hospitality and tom his wife (forgive me but i forgot her real name and don't want to use her road name) for theirs too. it was more than great to see everybody who was there. i'm sorry i wasn't able to meet those who weren't able to go but there is next year! and sorry for the length. - Viking |
From Brother Coolbreeze: I too, had a really wonderful time visiting my sober family in Santa Fe, I have many things I want to say, but I'm gearing up again to head to Memphis, TN for a few days, milk the last bit I can get from my vacation time. how funny is this? I found a hotel 10 miles from Beale street called Hotel Santa Fe. I had a BLAST with the folks I already knew from SBU and had a great time, meeting the new faces, Breeze, tiny and wild one. Tiny's daughter was there too, sherry, a great lil 8 yr old. We all took in a meeting Friday night I guess it was, and sherry handed out some bday coins, it was very touching, as she gave out hugs to these strangers to her also. Our hosts and tour guides in NM, were awesome, could not have asked for better host and hostesses. Chief Pinapple (Tom) and his lovely wife, Kristy (Happy Butt! finally someone said it!) and Tom's mother were most gracious. Tom's mom and Happy Butt, threw us a bar b cue at her place Sunday evening after a longgg day of riding in the mountains. A new fellow, David bar b cued for us, and I hope had a great time with the whole SBU visit, he's a newcomer and has nearly 30 days now. I wish the best for him and hope he finds happiness in his life. Also was great to meet newest NM member/John, like Tom he was an excellent tour guide on one of our rides. There was one scary incident with Mouse and Pockets, but with their riding experience and God watching over our group, everything turned out fine. I can't wait for MN, can we go now? I hope some more new faces can make it next time also. Anyone who's not been to an SBU event really should try to make it. It turns from a vacation to a retreat usually. I really, really enjoyed the motorcycle blessing too, CMA came out and sat and prayed with us, and enjoyed some great commraderie. The setting on the campground could not have been any better. The things I thought were gonna be corny, turned out to be the best parts, (on the road, I usually don't wanna be bothered with a meeting, but it was GREAT, and CMA, while they were a bit Jesusy for me, it was all good, their intentions are great and blessed all our bikes. Much better than going to a stone church (with often times the most hypocritical people dressed in their Sunday best) I'd like to thank SJ and Paca, for their efforts in all they do for us, and the other directors as well, Mouse and Wisconsin Wolf. I know it's a labor of love for them all, and I'm glad they put the effort into it. After years of not feeling a "part" of anything, I really, really dig the whole SBU experience. anyone who stayed here near St. Louis, it was my pleasure, anyone else in SBU who finds themselves in the area, mi casa su casa. - Love yall, - Coolbreeze |
| Hello all, I wanted to write a quick summary of my events, and the events of this National Convention. I started out running that bike like a mad man from Buffalo, NY. to to Maine to enjoyed the real biker world of Laconia for 2 days but the ride back and forth through the lands of Maine and New Hampshire are just breath-taking and with so many other riders doing the same the roads are full of 2 wheelers. I then left Maine and started my travel to Santa Fe I came back through Buffalo and slept a few hours in my own bed which you will see was a nice comfort stop. I started out for Santa Fe on tuesday am and well like Forrest Gump I just rode and rode I rode 1.049 miles straight in 16hrs 57 minutes with breaks for fuel and etc. Then I took a well nites rest in my roll-up sleeping quarters a WW2 green blanket. I then met the crew in Oklahoma City were we all had a great day/nite before hitting the road again to Santa Fe.I left early in the am for a 600 mile, 9 hour ride to this beautiful land of Santa Fe where I took in a shower and some site seeing with Tom (Chief) or Mr.Santa Fe himself. Was great meeting you and your Wife the happy **** (Krissy)As for meeting everyone at Santa Fe, I had the time of my life with these people we meet and talk with on the computer for a whole year. I',m not going to start naming names because it was a fantastic time with all. I mean that we all had a choice to do are own thing in Santa Fe but we all descide to stick together and we did I totald about 800 plus miles in the weekend we were ther just riding and that was with the whole group we had adventure of 14 bikes riding out at a time we stuck together like a family.I would like everyone to get a vacation for next years event I can only tell you all your missing out, On something that just makes me proud of the people we deal with here in SBU. We had a bike blessing which was a great turn out of CMA people which some drove 80 miles to say hell, bless and pray and share with SBU. My rode home was pretty much a quicker ride home then my fast paced ride out I went 800 plus miles to Wichita, KS to see a friend (Which I want Happy **** to know I was a good boy). I recieved a call from MIke (Viking) and the BIGHEAD we discussed my battery trouble and well the where 100% correct thanks guys. I left at am. and arrived 20 hrs later home with a 1200 plus mile run which became my second Iron Butt off 1000 miles in a 24 hr. period this one took me a bit longer it was 17 hrs and 14 minutes and another 2hrs 45 min. to Buffalo. I think you guys might be changing my name from wild Monkey too? Wild Donkey. I hope to meet more of SBU in Minn. But for the Santa Fe trip this was the BOMB> Thanks everyone for a great Vacation. - Wild Monkey |
| There really are no words to fully express the fun and experiences of our time together. Because each National is unique and different in it's own way, there isn't really anything to compare to either. My experience this year has made me decide that I will do a lot of journaling and note taking next year... it's just too much in too short a time to keep track of. I especially want to thank Chief, Happy Butt, and Santa Fe Ma for all they did to help make this such a great run. It's the hard work, dedication, and caring of people like them that help bring these things together. Two things that stand out in my mind are 1. that this run was so "good" that new members and supporters joined SBU on thespot and many more asked for more information and 2. that so many people at the AA meeting, restaurants and places we stopped were so impressed that we had come from so far away in so many directions to join in family and fellowship for the weekend. We cannot overlook the hard work and devotion of Sober Joe and Paca in all they did to make this happen. In so many ways, we owe this weekend to them because from them came SBU and the cause for us to come together. It was so wonderful to put more faces to names and to again see the faces of those I've come to love, truly, as brothers and sisters. I also very much appreciate the opportunity to get to know more about and grow closer to many of my brothers and sisters. I can only imagine how great 2004's National Run will be. - Wolf |

The Naming of Happy Butt :
Since no one has come forward to do so, let me explain how Happy Butt came to be. Krissy is Chief's wife and is a petite lady... not much "padding" to sit on. Although she has her own bike to ride, she generally prefers to ride behind Chief on his new Indian (guess why he's called Chief!). During one of the runs at National, Krissy decided to try a ride on Wild Monkey's brand new Anniversary Edition Harley dresser. It was a rather long ride before the next stop, but when we did stop, someone asked Krissy how the ride was. Her first response was "I have a happy butt!" The rest is history! Happy Butt is one of our newest supporters... Her experiences at the National Run (including being teased about her happy butt) got her so pumped up, she wanted to join before the weekend was done ... - Wolf |
| While exiting the Albuquerque airport Friday morning, I heard the distant rumble of bikes leaving the pick up area outside. Wild Monkey was the last passing by. Sister June Bug yells "hop on" Security had just asked my Sisters & Brothers to leave the no parking area with their bikes & were pulling to the fire zone when I ran out the doors. What a reception! We had a beautiful 70 mile ride back to Santa Fe after stopping at a near by Burger King for hugs, kisses & laughs. All smiles & picture taking. That night we made a meeting in town & took up about half the hall. There was a great lil' coffee shop in the font & the folks at the meeting were the friendliest. Then off to I-Hop to take up half of their restaurant space. Saturday morning at our Annual meeting (after a great pancake breakfast & bike wash) we had a blast taking care of business. The most moving moment was giving the Directors Choice Award to brother Viking for dedication & service. He is a sweetie in my book & I am proud to call him my Brother. After our "group photos" we split up & went out site seeing. Stopped at the local Harley dealer for grins then off to Chimayo. It was beautiful. You couldn't get much closer to being set back in time to native ways there. Totaled about 300 miles that day riding. Sunday was another super est 300 mile ride to Rio Grand gorge & Angel Fire. Awesome is the only word I can put to it...Looking out over the country sides one would expect to see the Indians riding their pony's along the ridges. The smells of fresh sage in the air & occasional grit from the sand in your mouth made you want to tie your bandanna around your mouth like the old western cowboys did. As some us did tie those bandannas on while riding our iron horses through the desert. My road king earned a new name that day heading up the winding roads to Angel Fire, as a approaching car took my side of the road. I ran off to the dirt shoulder & the bike handled superbly. Her new name is Champ, as she handled like one. Or was I really blessed after the bike blessing received by our friends of CMA at the morning service? That night we ate at Chief's mom's. Thanks ! What a great Sister you are. Monday was a slow start, loading bikes, saying our good-byes with hugs & tears....Brothers Big Head & Viking headed out with our crew taking the same route across I-40 east. We had an extra journey playing trailer tag back & forth. Some changing places & catching a quick nap in the back of our SUV. We stopped off in Memphis Tn. to have a look at Graceland & take a few more pics. Playing every chance we could to make our visit even longer. Pockets, Simple Man, Slider & myself couldn't have planned a better time this weekend. We love being a part of Sober Bikers United, Inc.. This was my third Annual Run this year & they just keep getting better! We are preparing for next years run & fun. Enjoy the pics & see you in them next year! - Mouse |
